U.S. Internet Providers are on the Menu
China’s hackers never rest, and this time they’ve found their way into several large internet providers in the United States. The target? It’s not just you (though your data is always a great target), but our government personnel and our military.
According to the Washington Post, the goal for right now just seems to be “gathering data,” but what happens once they have it? Once they do, chaos is at their command! They can digitally impersonate high-ranking officers and gain access to our most critical military secrets. Imagine the ability to disrupt communication between troops or to know the location of all weapons.
This seems like another attack by the group known as Volt Typhoon (which we’ve discussed here before), which has repeatedly denied any ties to the Chinese government. The group can deny it all they want, but they are gathering the exact type of intelligence the Chinese government wants. Not to mention the sophistication of these hacks, allowing hackers to get all the way to the DNS systems, implementing as many back doors as they needed before anyone even noticed.
Should we not take these hacks more seriously, our entire digital infrastructure could crumble before we can even say “Volt Typhoon.”
