Salt in the Wound

We’ve talked about Chinese hacker group Volt Typhoon before, but let me introduce you to its evil twin Salt Typhoon, who has been tampering with a variety of American telecommunication companies in the last several months. If you have a Verizon account, your information might be in their hands.

This information could give foreign adversaries personal information related to our top officials (including who they’re speaking to, and for how long), and important data related to our campaign officials and their staff.

The severity of the breach is still uncertain, but there is cause to be concerned that Salt Typhoon was able to get into American cell and data networks, once again stressing just how vulnerable these systems are. It might be one of the biggest data breaches in decades, but our systems can’t even tell us how broken they are.
